"America is becoming addicted to carbohydrates. Since the onset of the no fat, low fat craze, the average American has gained eight pounds, primarily through carbohydrate addiction. Fat provides flavor and texture in food and to make fat-free foods more palatable, food manufacturers add more sugar (a carbohydrate), plus other additives. Some signs of carbohydrate addiction are:

  • intense cravings for carbohydrate-rich foods
  • difficulty dropping extra pounds
  • excessive need to urinate
  • fatigue in late morning or early afternoon
  • excessive thirst
  • mood swings
  • light headedness
  • recurrent blurred vision

Carbohydrate addiction symptoms are identical to warning signs for diabetes. Diabetes is increasing at the rate of 6% every year and is the seventh leading cause of deaths in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control." "As food is digested, it breaks down into glucose. Glucose enters the bloodstream and as blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin helps glucose leave the bloodstream and enter the tissue; however, some glucose is stored in the liver for later access. Glucose is used as fuel. When the glucose supply runs out, insulin levels drop. Stored sugar in the liver is then released into the bloodstream by the pancreatic hormone glucagon." "When too much insulin (hyperinsulinimia) has removed too much glucose from the bloodstream and/or sugar stored in the liver does not leave the liver to provide more glucose (energy), the result is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)... Low blood sugar can cause rampant and uncontrollable eating binges. It causes stimulation of the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) fat enzyme, which increases fat storage. LPL activity in fatty tissue is increased by insulin. Stimulate insulin and you stimulate storage of fat. High glycemic foods and drinks stimulate LPL, which causes enlargement of fat cells..."
